TAZARA is gateway to the Eastern, Central and Southern African business markets covering both the SADC and COMESA regional groupings, runs from the port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to the town of New Kapiri Mposhi in Central Zambia where it links with the existing Zambia Railways System. The gauge of the line is same at 1067 millimeters (three and half feet) as that of Zambia Railways as well as all the other main trunk lines in Central and Southern Africa. Excellent, this is the really Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority, your preferred Transporter.
TAZARA has modern Dry Cargo Terminus with complete facilities at New Kapiri Mposhi and Kasama in Zambia as well as in Mbeya, Makambako and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania for handling all types of cargo from containerized traffic to break bulk cargo.
There is also a private owned trans-shipment facility at Kidatu that handles the transfer of cargo from the wider gauge wagons of TAZARA onto the narrower gauge wagons of the Tanzania Railways Limited (TRL) facilitating connection amongst Southern, Central and East African regions in Tanzania. Most such cargo is sugar from Kilombero and imports from South Africa.
TAZARA collaborates closely with the Tanzania Port Authority, Tanzania Revenue Authority as well as the Zambia Revenue Authority to ensure that the clearing and handling of cargo documentation is streamlined and speeded up. These joint operations also facilitate the fast movement of transit goods.
Trains are not delayed at the Zambia/Tanzania boarder because of the pre-clearance arrangements at Dar es Salaam and New Kapiri Mposhi.
